IEEE Standards for Industrial Circuit Breakers

The design of reliable commercial and industrial circuit breakers is important to variety of people involved with electrical engineering and the electrical field as a whole. A critical part for these professionals is how to properly estimate the frequency of voltage generated throughout a system, including industrial circuit breakers. One organization who works hard to keep electrical standards high and well documented is the IEEE.

What is the IEEE?

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) is a professional association that works to advance technology innovation in the areas of computing, sustainable energy systems, aerospace, electrical standards, communications, robotics and healthcare.

The IEEE is led by a body of elected and appointed volunteer members. They represent 45 different professional societies and technical councils from around the world. One of the areas the IEEE focuses on is electrical engineering techniques, manufacturing standards and safety.

Industrial circuit breakers and the IEEE

The IEEE is regularly involved with helping electrical professionals stay current on the latest advances in electrical engineering through training and documentation provided to their membership. They have provided recommended practices for reliable design of industrial circuit breakers for decades as the industry continues to advance.

The need for a quantitative approach focused on industrial circuit breakers began in the early 1960′s when a small group organized a survey of the reliability of electrical equipment, including industrial Circuit Breakers, in use in industrial plants. Since then, those surveys have continued. As a result, they have developed important standards for the electrical industry. Today, these surveys and conducted by the Power Systems Reliability Subcommittee, Power Systems Engineering Committee, and the Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Department of the IEEE Industry Application Society.

The latest surveys and documentation have included how to properly estimate voltage frequency at industrial and commercial sties, the number of tests that should be conducted to prove reliability of emergency systems and reliability data on high and low-voltage industrial circuit breakers. These surveys work to provide reliable analysis related to the planning, design and manufacturing of industrial and commercial electrical power distribution systems, including industrial circuit breakers.
