Safety Precautions for Industrial Electrical Power Systems

Electrical power systems are necessary to make sure that your equipment continues to function properly. However, as with any other sort of machine, problems with these industrial electrical power systems can range from inconvenient to outright dangerous. As such, it’s important that you follow all of the necessary precautions to stay safe when there are problems with your system.

Industrial Electrical Power Systems Safety Requirements

The first thing that you should do is be sure that you lock out any sort of access to electrical controls in the event of a problem. A lockout for electrical power systems means that you need to prevent access to switches or other locations where the power can be manipulated from. Put padlocks onto circuit breaker covers, or lock open the circuit breaker itself so that the circuit can’t be closed. Once the lock outs are put in place, make sure that only necessary personnel have access to the keys to open up the access and make alterations.

Any work areas on an electrical power system need to be properly grounded so that they’re safe. Grounding means providing an easy path for any built up charges to go through so that you don’t have the potential for shocks in the work area. Once this easy path has been established it will suck power away and keep personnel safe.

Most rules pertaining to safety, that electricians adhere to, can be used as a rough guideline for safety precautions in industrial electrical power systems. A first aid box that is clearly marked with signs that lead to the box should be installed. Protective gear should be used at all times and provided by the company. All tools and related equipment should be organized and in a clean condition. Defective components should be replaced immediately to prevent further danger and or damage to the electrical power systems.

Working Safely with and Around Electrical Power Systems

Should an injury occur, medical personnel should be requested and the incident should be properly documented in accordance with established procedures. Loose clothing and jewelry should not be worn when working with or around electrical power systems. Any electrical equipment should be sufficiently discharged of electricity before repairs or replacements are attempted. This should also include the locking out of disconnects.

Safety in working with electrical power systems relies on continual adherence to protocol. Consistency in routine is the best way to maintain a safe working environment for all workers. The goal of all workers should be to stay safe and keep their co-workers out of harm. Even a gentle reminder to a co-worker to put on safety goggles could prevent a loss of vision or worse.

In addition to these safety precautions any industrial power system should have proper labels and signs, and workers should be sure to wear insulated protective equipment to minimize their risk of electrocution.
